Church Staff

Rector —The Rev. Timothy Johnson

The Rev. Timothy Johnson came to St. Andrew’s from Charles County, Maryland, where he served as the rector of two parishes – Christ Church (La Plata) and Christ Church (Wayside). Prior to accepting a call to the Christ Churches, he served as chaplain and religion teacher at Washington Episcopal School in Bethesda, Maryland. Before entering the priesthood, Tim was a public school teacher for 12 years in Virginia, where he taught at the elementary and secondary levels.

Tim describes himself as having the heart of a teacher, and he brings his love of teaching to his priestly ministry. Through preaching, Christian education, and mentoring, he strives to help others grow in their knowledge of God and to be shaped and formed by that knowledge. He has a commitment to evangelism and outreach, and a passion for nurturing a spirit of joy within the life of the church. He believes that joy is both contagious and necessary to building up our parish communities.

Tim is a native of Charlottesville, Virginia, and he grew up in the surrounding area just outside the city, spending summers on his father’s farm. He attended James Madison University in Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he studied philosophy, religion, and business administration. Following college, he attended Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia, where he earned a Master of Divinity. He also holds a Master of Public Policy from George Mason University. Tim and his husband married recently and are excited about making a home among the St. Andrew’s Church community and College Park.

Assistant to the Rector for Formation and Pastoral Care, The Rev. Kristen Tossell Pitts

The Rev. Kristen Tossell Pitts was ordained at St. Andrew's (under license from the Diocese of Upper South Carolina) this year following her graduation from Virginia Theological Seminary with a Masters. She grew up in a rural area near Greenville, South Carolina and completed her undergraduate studies at Furman University. Prior to seminary, she taught high school English and was very active in leadership at her sponsoring parish. More recently, she has worked for the Center for the Ministry of Teaching, where she focused on curriculum and related formation resources. Her other ministry interests include pastoral care, social justice, and the calling of all baptized persons to ministry. She spends half her time with St. Andrew's and the other half as the Chaplain for the University of Maryland Episcopal Campus Ministry.

Outside of work, she enjoys photography, reading, and seeking out the best vegan foods in DC with her wife, Beth, who is a lawyer with the Department of Health and Human Services. They married in April and now live in Takoma Park with their two cats, Sebastian and Scuttle.
